The billionaire businessman Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani (born 19 April 1957) is the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a Fortune Global 500 company and one of India's largest companies. A Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimate of Ambani's net worth for February 2023 is $83.4 billion, making him the 10th richest person in the world and the richest person in Asia.
Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani, the chairman and managing director of the Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), the largest company within the Indian energy and materials conglomerate Reliance Group, was born on April 19, 1957, in Aden, Yemen. The son of Dhirubhai Ambani, who first worked as a gas station attendant, was one of four children.
As a result of the increasingly unstable political climate in Aden, where Mukesh was born, the family moved to Bombay (now Mumbai)'s Bhuleshwar neighborhood in 1958, where they lived in a chawl (a communal building with low-rent two-room apartments). Dhirubhai and his cousin founded the Reliance Commercial Corporation, which grew into RIL from a commodities-trading business they operated out of a one-room rental.
Mukesh Ambani attended Hill Grange High School in Mumbai. After his secondary schooling, he attended St. Xavier's College, in Mumbai. From the Institute of Chemical Technology, he earned a BE degree in chemical engineering.
Upon completing his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering at the University of Bombay (now the University of Mumbai), Ambani pursued a master's degree in business administration at Stanford University but withdrew in 1980. His father felt that real-life skills are harnessed through experiences rather than by sitting in a classroom, so he called his son back to India from Stanford to lead a yarn manufacturing project in his company. He left the program in 1981 to join the family business, where he worked to diversify the company, venturing into a vast array of areas, including communications.
It has been reported that Ambani was influenced by his professors William F. Sharpe and Man Mohan Sharma because they were "the kind of professors who challenged you to think outside the box."
In 2004, PricewaterhouseCoopers named him one of the world's most respected business leaders for his work in infrastructure, petrochemicals, petroleum refining, polyester fibers, and gas and oil production.
In 1981, Dhirubhai Ambani enlisted the help of his son to assist with their family business, Reliance Industries Limited. By that point, it had expanded to include refining and petrochemicals, along with a range of products and services in retail and telecommunications. Its subsidiary, Reliance Retail Ltd., is now the largest retailer in India. Their telecommunication organization, Jio, has also moved into the top five since its public launch on 5 September 2016.

By October 2020, his ranking had risen on Forbes to become the 6th-wealthiest person globally.
In July 2018, he overcame Jack Ma, executive chairman of Alibaba Group, to become Asia's richest person with an estimated net worth of $44.3 billion. Additionally, he is the wealthiest individual outside North America and Europe. According to China's Hurun Research Institute, Ambani was fifth among India's philanthropists in 2015. He was also appointed Director of Bank of America and was its first non-American board member.
Besides owning the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, he founded the Indian Super League, a football league in India, through Reliance. Forbes named him one of the world's richest sports owners in 2012.
After the passing of Dhirubhai in 2002, Kokilaben Ambani decided to have both Mukesh and Anil share the Reliance companies. Nevertheless, disagreements concerning leadership eventually caused their mother to divide the business's assets using a non-competition agreement (2006–10) with Mukesh receiving control of gas, oil, and petrochemicals units comprising RIL under the Reliance Group. Acknowledgement is given to Mukesh for erecting the world's largest start-up petroleum refinery as well as leading the construction of some cutting-edge manufacturing installations that remarkably improved RIL's production capabilities.
In 2006, Ambani was selected to join the India Economic Summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF) - an international organization comprising well-known CEOs, politicians, policymakers, academics, benefactors, trade unionists, and representatives from non-governmental organizations. Every year this consortium meets to deliberate on global commerce, economic issues, politics, and significant social matters.
In 2010, Ambani founded Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of RIL dedicated to telecommunications and e-commerce. In 2016, Jio launched the first nationwide 4G broadband network.
When Ambani became India's first trillionaire in 2007, he was simultaneously named the world's richest man by the Economic Times newspaper and Press Trust of India. Mumbai Indians, an Indian Premier League cricket team, were founded in the following year by him.
