Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, known as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, is one of the prominent novelists and poets in the history of India. He wrote Vande Mataram, which is the national song of India.
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was born on June 27, 1838, in the village Kantalpara of the 24 Parganas District of Bengal. His father Yadav Chattopadhyaya was in government service. After his birth, he was posted to Midnapur as Deputy Collector.
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was born in Midnapur and had his early education there. Later, he moved to Hooghly and attended Mohsin College for six years where he studied an advanced level of education. He read books throughout his academic career, as well as books in Sanskrit. His knowledge of Sanskrit helped him when he went on to write books in Bengali.
In 1856, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee joined the Presidency College in Calcutta. In 1857, there was a strong revolt against the rule of the East India Company, and Bankim Chandra Chatterjee continued his studies to complete his Bachelor's Degree in 1859. The Lieutenant Governor of Calcutta appointed Bankim Chandra Chatterjee as Deputy Collector in 1859. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee held public service for 32 years before retiring in 1891. He was a very conscientious worker who dedicated much of his life to public service.

He was married when he was only eleven and his wife was five years old. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee also married again after some time. His second wife was Rajlakshmi Devi. They had three daughters but no son.
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee began to write and publish poetry in his eighteenth year. At the age of twenty-six, he became a novelist with his first novel being Durgeshnandini, which was published at the age of forty-five. His most famous novels include Anandmath (1882), Kapalkundala (1866), Mrinalini (1869), Vishbriksha (1873), Chandrasekhar (1877), Rajani (1877), Rajasimha (1881), and Devichayatnami (1884). One of the most famous novels by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee is Anand Math (1882). In it, he referenced a song that gained popular awareness as its National Song.
Although Bankim Chandra Chatterjee had lofty ambitions, he wanted to bring about the revival of Bengal through a literary campaign. With this goal in mind, he started a monthly magazine called Bangadarshan in 1872.
Writer Bankim Chatterjee was a master of story-telling. Through his published works, he found popular success and was translated into almost every major language. He passed away on April 8, 1894.
