Sarojini, who was born in Hyderabad on February 13th, 1879, is a celebrated female Indian author. She began writing early on in life before making the transition to politics. Her family, who were Bengalis like her father, ran a school called Nizam College that educated many students during the 1800s. She grew up under British administration and graduated from college with honors before leaving England for India to work as a suffragist and then as an activist opposed to British rule in India.
She became a significant player in the Indian Nationalist movement and became a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. She was arrested with other Congress leaders, including Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Madan Mohan Malaviya for participating in the 1930 Salt March.

Sarojini was one of the main figures to have led the Civil Disobedience Movement and the Quit India Movement. She faced repeated arrestings by British authorities during her time, spending over 21 months (1 year 9 months) in jail while serving as president of the Indian National Congress. At the end of her life, she reluctantly accepted appointment as the first woman Governor General of United Provinces in 1947.
Her poetry was often so famous that she earned the sobriquet 'the Nightingale of India,' or 'Bharat Kokila' because of her lyrical quality and imagery. Her poems included both children's poems and other pieces on more serious subjects including patriotism, romance, and tragedy. Published in 1912, In the Bazaars of Hyderabad remains one of her most popular poems.
She died of a cardiac arrest on 2 March, 1949. Lucknow.
