Amit Shah's Political Role in Gujarat: In October 2001, Narendra Modi became Gujarat's chief minister, and Keshubhai Patel was removed from office by the BJP high command for poor administrative performance. As a result, Amit Shah also gained political prominence. Both Modi and Shah were able to eliminate their political rivals.
Amit Shah registered a thumping victory in the 2002 Gujarat Legislative Assembly Elections from the Sarkhej assembly segment with a margin of close to 1,60,000 votes. He was given multiple ministerial portfolios simultaneously in the Narendra Modi government after his victory in the 2002 elections. Three years later, when the UPA-led central government decided to repeal the Prevention of Terror Acts (POTA) law, Amit Shah managed to get the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (GCOC) Bill passed in the state assembly. This law would make religious conversions difficult, however, Amit Shah defended it successfully.
After BJP's thumping victory in the 2014 Indian General Elections, Amit Shah's political career was infused with new life. Shah became increasingly influential within the party after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister. Rajnath Singh selected him as Uttar Pradesh in charge. Amit Shah's strategic and organizational abilities helped BJP win 73 of the 80 parliamentary seats in Uttar Pradesh under his supervision.
As BJP national president, he replaced Rajnath Singh in July 2014. He was re-elected unanimously in January 2016.
According to the CBI, two Rajasthan-based businessmen paid Amit Shah for a hitman to get rid of Sohrabuddin, who'd been harassing them. The CBI told a court that Amit Shah and DIG DG Vanzara allegedly planned and executed the killings in an extrajudicial encounter. Amit Shah denied involvement and accused the Congress party of remote controlling the CBI to falsely incriminate him with charges. He was charged in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case but later cleared by the CBI, which said he had no involvement.
In 2002, Amit Shah allegedly tampered with evidence and coerced witnesses in connection with the Gujarat Riots. The Opposition accused him of illegally ordering officers to spy on a woman related to the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. However, in May 2014, the female subject of the surveillance denied these allegations. She called for an end to any further investigations to protect her privacy. Amit Shah has stated that this is just a political ploy by the opposition parties against him.
The statements made by Amit Shah have promoted hatred and ill-will between religions. According to him, Hindus in Muzaffarnagar, in western Uttar Pradesh, need to vote to avenge themselves at the ballot box in April. As a result, over 40 people were killed and tens of thousands were displaced in September 2013 as a result of cruel violence between Hindus and Muslims.
Amit Shah, who was said to be the perfect successor to Narendra Modi as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, was arrested in the Sohrabuddin Fake Encounter case in July 2010.
