Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia (born 1 January 1971) is an Indian politician who is the Minister of Civil Aviation, a position his father also held from 1991 to 1993. He concurrently heads the Ministry of Steel and serves as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Madhya Pradesh. Before this, he was an MP in the Lok Sabha, representing Guna district until his defeat in the 2019 election. He formerly had ties to the Indian National Congress (INC) but now belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
As a member of INC, Scindia held various ministerial positions from 2007 to 2014 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. However, he left the party and joined the BJP in 2020. As well as these political roles, he is also the son of late statesman Madhavrao Scindia and grandson of Jivajirao Scindia, the final monarch of Gwalior during British rule in India.
Scindia was born on 1 January 1971 in Mumbai to Madhavrao Scindia and Madhavi Raje Scindia. He originally belongs to the Kurmi caste. Scindia attended Campion School in Mumbai and The Doon School in Dehradun.
He was admitted to St. Stephen's College, Delhi, University of Delhi, after which he transferred to Harvard College, the undergraduate liberal arts college of Harvard University, where he graduated with a BA in Economics in 1993. From Stanford Graduate School of Business, he received his Master of Business Administration in 2001.
His grandfather was Jivajirao Scindia, the last Maharaja of the princely state of Gwalior. His father Madhavrao Scindia was an Indian politician and a minister in Rajiv Gandhi's government. His mother is Madhavi Raje Scindia (Kiran Rajya Lakshmi Devi). He is married to Priyadarshini Raje Scindia.
After Scindia's father, Madhavrao Scindia, the sitting MP in Guna, died in an airplane crash on 30 September 2001, the constituency fell vacant. The INC formally accepted him on 18 December, and he pledged to uphold his father's secular, liberal, and social justice values.
In the Guna by-election on 24 February, Scindia defeated his closest rival, Desh Raj Singh Yadav of the BJP, by nearly 450,000 votes. In 2004, he was re-elected and introduced to the Union Council of Ministers as Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology in 2007. In 2009, he was re-elected for a third consecutive term and became Minister of State for Commerce and Industry.
In 2007, Sincia was appointed Minister of State for Communication. Later, he was appointed Minister of State Independent for Power in a cabinet reshuffle, which included two other princely scions, R. P. N. Singh and Jitendra Singh, into the Indian cabinet.
During the UPA government, Scindia was among the most prosperous ministers, with assets valued at $25 crore (US$3.1 million), including investments in Indian and foreign securities worth $2 million and jewelry worth $713,831). He filed a legal claim in 2010 to be the sole inheritor of the property belonging to his late father, but his aunts challenged this in court.
It was the Indian Planning Commission's responsibility to prevent a repeat of the July 2012 blackout in India, which affected more than 620 million people (about 9% of the world's population). In May 2013, Scindia claimed that checks and balances had been put in place to prevent any recurrence of grid collapse and that India would have the world's largest integrated grid by January 2014.
After being elected from Guna in 2014, Scindia lost his seat to Krishna Pal Singh Yadav. He was appointed General Secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh West in 2019.
Scindia's decision to quit the Congress party on 10 March 2020 sparked a chain of events that led to the 2020 Madhya Pradesh political crisis. As a result, Kamal Nath was forced to resign as Chief Minister on 23 March 2020 and Shivraj Singh Chouhan took his place, taking oath as the new Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on the same day. The Congress party released a statement blaming Scinidia for anti-party activities, while other MLAs loyal to him also resigned from the INC and their MLA posts.
After a cabinet reshuffle in July 2021, Scindia was appointed as the Minister of Civil Aviation in the Second Modi ministry on 7 July 2021.
During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Scindia was appointed PM Modi's special envoy to Romania to oversee the evacuation of Indian nationals in Ukraine. He is overseeing the evacuation efforts of students and Indian professionals through Bucharest and Suceava as part of Operation Ganga.
The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) is led by Scindia. Scindia spoke out against corruption in Indian cricket after the spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League was revealed, and Sanjay Jagdale, a member of the MPCA, resigned as secretary to the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
His great grandfather, Madho Rao Scindia, founded Scindia School in 1897, and he serves as President of the Board of Governors.
Additionally, he is a hereditary patron of Daly College, which was founded in 1870 to educate the children of the royalty and nobility of Central Indian princely states of the Marathas, Rajputs, Mohameddans, and Bundelas.
Madhav Institute of Technology and Science is headed by Scindia.
