A politician and activist, Mohan Bhagwat is serving the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh as the 6th and current Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in India. He was selected in March 2009 to succeed K. S. Sudarshan.
Mohan Madhukar Bhagwat was born into a Marathi family in Chandrapur, part of the then-Bombay State. His family had a long history of links to the RSS, with his father Madhukar Rao appointed as Karyavah for the Chandrapur zone, before moving to Prant Pracharak for Gujarat.
Furthermore, Malati, his mother, was part of the Women's Wing.
To further his education, Bhagwat attended Lokmanya Tilak Vidyalaya before completing the first year of his BSc at Janata College in Chandrapur. He decided to pursue Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry at Government Veterinary College in Nagpur and dropped his postgraduate course in 1975 to become a full-time Pracharak of the RSS.
After joining the RSS, during the Emergency period, Bhagwat was made in charge of Akola in Maharashtra in 1977. His career progressed, and he eventually became India's Akhil Bharatiya Sharirik Pramukh (in charge of physical training) from 1991 to 1999. He then became Akhil Bharatiya Pracharak Pramukh (in charge of RSS volunteers working full-time for India). When Rajendra Singh and H. V. Sheshadri retired due to ill health in 2000, K. S. Sudarshan was appointed as chief, and Bhagwat got promoted to Sar Karyavah (general secretary).
As a result of a high perception of threat from Islamist terrorist organizations, the Indian government ordered Bhagwat to be protected round-the-clock by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Today, Bhagwat is one of the most protected Indians, thanks to Z+ VVIP security cover.
Bhagwat was invited to Rashtrapati Bhawan for the first time by then-President Pranab Mukherjee in 2017. As part of reaching out to the broader public, Mohan Bhagwat presided over a 3-day session at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi in September 2018. He said then that the RSS had discarded some parts of M. S. Golwalkar's Bunch of Thoughts that were no longer relevant.
The state-run Animal and Fishery Sciences University awarded Mohan Bhagwat an honorary doctor of science (DSc) degree during its convocation ceremony in Nagpur in 2017.
Mohan Bhagwat was born on 11 September 1950.
A high perception of a threat from various Islamist terrorist organizations led the government of India to order Bhagwat to be protected round-the-clock by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in June 2015. Bhagwat is among the most protected Indians today with Z+ VVIP security cover.
