Ram Nath Kovind was born on October 1st , 1945 to Mauiku Lal and Kalawati in Paraunkh village in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh. He was the youngest of five brothers and two sisters. His father ran a shop and was also a farmer and a local doctor, while his mother was a homemaker. When he was five, his mother succumbed to burns when their crudely made house caught fire.
Kovind's first job was to walk 8 km each day until he reached his junior school, and no one in the village had a bicycle. He managed to get an education-he holds a bachelor's degree in Commerce and an LLB from Kanpur University.
Ram Nath Kovind Career
Ram Nath Kovind began his career as an advocate in 1971 and served as the Central Government Advocate from 1977 to 1979. He also served as personal assistant to Prime Minister Morarji Desai between 1977 and 1978.
In 1978, Konin became an advocate-on-record of the Supreme Court of India. He served as a standing counsel for the central government in the Supreme Court of India from 1980 to 1993.
He worked with the Free Legal Aid Society of New Delhi and provided a vpro bono service to the society's underserved communities.
Career as a Politician
Kovind was a member of the BJP since 1991. He served as the head of the BJP Dalit Morcha from 1998 to 2002. He then went on to become the national spokesperson for the party. He donated his family home to RSS and contested against the JD(U) candidate in Ghatampur and Bhognipur assembly constituency but did not win either time.
Rajya Sabha MP
Kovind served as an MP in the Rajya Sabha for two consecutive terms, starting in April 1994, before his tenure ended in March 2006. He served on a number of Parliamentary committees during his time there, including committees that dealt with welfare for scheduled castes and tribes, home affairs, petroleum and natural gas, social justice and empowerment, law and justice. He was also the chairperson of the House Committee of the Rajya Sabha.
He also served on the Board Management of Dr. B.R Ambedkar University, Lucknow, and the Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta. He has also represented India at the UN and addressed the UN General Assembly in 2002.
Governor of Bihar
He was appointed to the post of Governor of Bihar in August 2015, and served on the post until 2017. His appointment on the government post was criticized by individual CM Nitish Kumar as it came months before the state Assembly elections in 2015.
He was appointed without consulting the state government as recommended by Sarkaria Commission.
While serving as the Governor of Bihar, he was praised for using a judicial commission to explore irregularities in promotions and misrepresenting funds. He also appointed undeserving candidates to university positions.
President of India
On July 20, 2017 he was elected to become the 14th President of India with 65.5% of the vote. He's second only to K. R. Narayanan for being the first Dalit President. He took the oath as President on July 25, 2017.

After getting married to Savita on 30th May 1974, Ram Nath Kovind had one son, Prashant Kumar and a daughter, Swati.
