Days
Definition
A day is the amount of time it takes for the Earth to rotate around its axis once. That's about 86,400 seconds.
Origin
The word day originally means a single rotation made by the Earth around its axis. This has been re-defined in terms of seconds since 1960, when seconds were defined as the number of circular revolutions made by a point on the Earth's orbit around the Sun. In 1967, Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity redefined time itself, re-defining it as being measured in atomic transitions.
Current use
In many contexts, day is a term used to refer to a period of 24 hours. It's also commonly used as a reference for day time-the period during which the sun is up. In colloquial speech, it can also refer to days of the week or fixed clock periods like 6 a.m.-6 p.m., among other things.
Year
Definition
The earth orbits the sun just about 365 times every year of approximately 365 days. Earth sees season changes with varying weather, daylight hours, vegetation, and soil fertility over these periods of time.
Origin
Ever wondered why the debate over what year it is so incessant? It's because the word year can be used to describe different things. There are multiple definitions for a year in the civil sense, and even more in cosmic contexts. For example, an Earth year could be 365 or 366 days.
The Gregorian calendar has been the world's most widely used civil calendar for close to two centuries. The Julian calendar originally won that title by replacing the ancient Roman calendar.
Current use
What is a year? A year is based on the Gregorian calendar and is used worldwide. If you're in a culture that also uses a lunisolar calendar, then it becomes even more complicated as there are different definitions of what's a year. One definition we find particularly interesting is that of the Julian year, which is based on the SI base unit of seconds.
Year is also used to describe periods that are loosely associated with the calendar year, such as the seasonal year, fiscal year, and academic year.
