Pound
Definition
A pound (abbreviation: lb) is a unit of mass in imperial and US customary measurement. The international avoirdupois pound (the common pound used today) is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg. The avoirdupois pound is equivalent to 16 avoirdupois ounces.
Origin
The modern-day pound descended from the Roman libra, and there were numerous different definitions of the pound before the international avoirdupois system that is used today. This updated version was made in 1959. It was a system that had been commonly used during the 13th century. It is a system that was based on a physical one pound prototype weight that could be divided into 16 ounces, which had three evenly divisible numbers (8, 4, 2). This convenience may have contributed to the popularity of this system over other ones at the time which had 10, 12, or 15 subdivisions.
Current use
In the United States, the pound is widely used to measure your body's weight. Although the most common unit of measure in Great Britain (UK) is now the International System of Units, pounds are still used occasionally in certain contexts, including labelling packaged foods. The UK also often uses both pounds and stones when discussing a person's weight: one stone consists of 14 pounds.
Ton
Definition
A ton is a unit of weight or mass. In the US and Canada, the ton, also known as the short ton, is defined as 2,000 pounds or 908 kg. In the UK, the ton (sometimes referred to as the long ton) is defined as 2,240 avoirdupois pounds or 1,016 kg. The metric tonne (also known as WT) is a standard international system unit for measuring mass.
Origin
"Ton" comes from the "tun," a term for a large container that can hold about 175 to 213 imperial gallons, weighs about 2,000 pounds, and takes up approximately 60 cubic feet of space. Although some definitions of the ton are still used in certain countries, the metric ton—or tonne—is considered by many to be the definition of a ton.
Current use
The long ton is used in the UK and other countries that use the imperial system, and the short ton is used in the US. The tonne is used worldwide - even in countries where they still use other measurements of the ton. However, legally speaking, trade will be only conducted with the tonnes.
