Liter
Definition
The liter is a unit of volume that is recognized by the International System of Units, but it isn't an official SI unit. A liter is equal to 1 cubic decimeter (10dm*10dm*10dm), 1,000 cubic centimeters (1m*1m*1m), or 1/1,000 cubic meters (1000cm*1000cm*1000cm).
Origin
In the 1900s, a liter was defined according to definitions of weight and volume that were used during that time. However, these definitions were converted to be more accurate as we learned new things about how water behaves at different temperatures and pressures. As it turns out, the definition of a liter had been inaccurate because the prototype kilogram was actually too large. That definition has now been reverted back to what it originally was, and is currently measured as 1 cubic decimeter or 1000 cubic centimeters.
Current use
The liter is used to measure many liquid volumes and the sizes of various containers storing those liquids. It is also used to measure certain volumes that are not liquids, such as the size of car trunks, backpacks, and climbing packs, computer cases, microwaves, refrigerators, and recycling bins. And finally, in most countries around the world it's also used for labeling fuel prices.
Fluid ounce
Definition
1 fluid ounce (symbol: fl oz) is a unit of measuring volume. There are two variants of this measurement: the imperial and US customary systems, which both use the same values such as 1/16 of a fluid pint, 1/128 of a liquid gallon, or 29.57 mL.
Origin
The fluid ounce was originally based on the volume occupied by one ounce (weight) of a given liquid, such as wine or water. The imperial fluid ounce is equal to exactly 28.4130625 mL, while the US fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 mL.
Current use
The fluid ounce is popularly used as a unit of measurement for the volume of liquids. It can be found in the United States and the United Kingdom, which are both known for using several measures of volume.
