Ounce
Definition
One ounce (oz.) is a unit of mass in the imperial and US customary systems of measurement. The avoirdupois ounce is the most common type and is equivalent to one sixteenth of an avoirdupois pound.
Origin
The term "ounce" traces back to the Roman "uncia," which means a "twelfth part." A standardized copper bar was divided into twelve equal parts, or unciae. This relationship between the Roman pound and foot later contributed to the uncia being used as the basis for the modern inch as well as for an eighteenth-century British imperial ounce. According to a 1696 story by John Aubrey (among others), Swift's friend Godwin Dyer said that apparently this term came from a scale of weights used in Normandy in which a large coin broadly equaled one ounce of silver and eighteen deniers made up one pound. The term has been used with different definitions throughout history, such as when it referred to one-eighth of an American pint in Connecticut with 1/8 oz. = 4 teaspoons, or most often today on food packaging referring to ounces by weight not volume.
Current use
The American ounce is still used as a measurement of mass in the US customary system. It is mainly used for measuring packaged food, specific portions, and postal items. It can also be found in other countries around the world with a history rooted in British culture. The US no longer officially uses the ounce because it was replaced by the metric system. However, it can still be found in some settings where British culture prevails, such as restaurants in the UK.
Gram
Definition
The definition of grams is based on the kilogram. A gram is equal to one thousandth of a kilogram. In 2019, the SI base unit of mass no longer depends on the international prototype, but on Planck's constant, h, along with new definitions of the second and the meter.
Origin
Gram originally refers to the absolute weight of pure water in a cube at the melting point (later 4 °C). Originally, gram was defined as part of centimeter-gram-second systems up until the widespread adoption of SI units. In 1966, gram was redefined as one thousandth of a kilogram which is the base unit of mass in SI (meter-kilogram-second) systems.
Current use
The gram is widely used in every life as well as scientific contexts. For example, the gram is typically used to measure non-liquid ingredients used for cooking or groceries. Standards on the nutrition labels of food products often require the relative contents to be stated per 100 grams of the product.
