Pint
Definition
There are two pints: the imperial pint and the American pint. The imperial pint is about 568 mL total, while the American pint is about 473 mL of liquid or 551 mL of dry goods.
Origin
British and American pints are historically defined as 1/8 of a gallon. In 1824, the UK implemented a new definition of the gallon while the US chose to retain the older English measure of the wine gallon.
Current use
The dry pint, defined as one-eighth of a gallon, is still used as a measurement of volume in the United States. This can be seen with liquid pints, which are still often used for determining the volume of draught beer, cider, and milk in returnable containers. The metric system dictates that all liquids be measured using metric units--while the pint is not considered a standard unit for any goods or services, the holdover can be seen in places like pubs and bars.
Gallon (US)
Definition
A gallon is a volume measurement of liquid capacity, specifically in the US customary and imperial systems. The US gallon is 231 cubic inches, compared to the imperial gallons in the UK, Canada, and some Caribbean nations which are 4.54609 liters. In all systems, a gallon is divided into four quarts. Quarts can be divided into two pints and pints can be divided into two cups. A cup consists of two gills, making one gallon equal to four quarts, eight pints, sixteen cups or thirty-two gills. Differentiating between the American and imperial gallons, an American fluid ounce (1/128th) can be compared to an imperial fluid ounce (1/160th) in an imperial gallon measurement.
Origin
Historically, gallon is an English term derived from the Old Northern French word for wine jug. We use it in measureing the wine gallon and ale gallon.
Current use
In the United States, gallons are often used for containers. For example, some people use a half-gallon tub of ice cream or one-gallon carton of milk. In addition to this, gallons are used in fuel economy expressions and in some US territories. The imperial gallon is less commonly used - most countries around the world use liters when referencing fuel.
