Second
Definition
The second is the base unit of time in the International System. It is defined as the duration of 9,192,632,770 periods of radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state caesium atom at rest. This definition was adopted recently, and it is largely similar to previous definitions, except that more rigorous definitions are now being used.
Origin
The second, labeled as such to indicate objects are moving at approximately the same speed or a rate of about 1 distance per time interval, is one of many units.
The second was historically defined as 1/86400 of a day in 1832, which was based on the definition of a day as the approximate amount of time required for the Earth to complete a full rotation cycle relative to the sun.
The early definition of the second was a fraction of a day in the late 1940s after quartz crystal oscillator clocks were found. This resulted in a second defined as 1/31,556,925.9747 of the tropical year for 1900 January 0 at 12 hours ephemeris time. This definition was adopted as part of SI in 1960.
The second has been in use since 1967, but a recent change in 2018 to the definition of a second changes the way it's used in everyday life. The new rigor doesn't affect how it's been used until now.
Current use
One second is the only unit of time used in modern applications. There are few other units, if any, which are used in present-day applications to measure time
Day
Definition
The standard lengths of a day are determined by how many seconds there are. A single minute is 60 seconds, while an hour is 3,600 seconds.
origin
The word "day" originates from the Old English word "dæg." It's been defined in a number of ways over the years, but it turns out that one second is the equivalent. However, the definition changed again in 1967 when an understanding was made about atomic transitions by electrons.
Current use
There are many different definitions of the word day. One of the most common is to refer to a 24 hour time period. Another, more colloquial use, is to talk about the period of daytime or daytime hours. The term also has other meanings like a "day of the week" and fixed clock periods like 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, among others.
