Yamunotri Temple is located at the height of 4,421 meters from sea level in the Uttarkashi district amidst the Garhwal mountains and is known for the occurrence of the holy river Yamuna.
The importance of the Yamunotri temple lies in the mythological fact that Goddess Yamuna is twins with Yama, the God of Death. To change one's destiny from "death" to "life" pilgrims flock to Yamunotri Dham every year to seek blessings by giving and receiving long life. Therefore, Yamunotri Temple is an important destination in Chardham Yatra.
The Yamunotri temple opening and closing dates vary by year depending on the availability of parking lots, the Akshaya Tritiya date, the Diwali date, and the winter snowfall. The opening date is typically around mid-April or at the start of May on Akshaya Tritiya. Generally, it's open until November. It closes in winter because heavy snowfall will make travel difficult. However, during winters the idol of Goddess Yamuna is moved to Kharsali village to allow pilgrims to visit even if it is closed.
Yamunotri Temple has a rich architectural history. Its structure is based on the Nagar style, which can be seen in the different colors of stone. You'll find an interesting yellow conical-shaped minaret at the top, which is painted red and decorated with white marble stones.
The idol of Goddess Yamuna is made from polished granite with black stone that has a dazzling effect on it. There's an idol of Goddess Ganga in white stone that's placed next to her. The temple consists of a mandap where pilgrims come together for prayer and darshan. The Surya Kund and the Divya Shila are present outside the temple and worshipped before the deities enter the temple's premises.
The best time of year to visit Yamunotri is during the summer, which is between April and June. The average temperature ranges from 15°C to 20°C. You'll be able to travel and trek without problems, it doesn't matter what time of year it is.
The Yamunotri temple opens at 6:00 AM and closes at 8:00 PM. There are two types of aarti performed throughout the day - one during the morning and one at night. The morning aarti is from 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM and the evening aarti is from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. It's held by pujaris with authority about shastras. Usually, administrators of the temple hail from Kharsali village, which is nearest to it.
