The Bhuj Area Development Authority, also known by its short name BHADA was established after the disastrous earthquake on 26 January 2001 to help rebuild the city. Thanks to BHADA's efforts, four years later the city has infrastructure in place and is well-planned.

On April 24th 2001, members of the Cabinet met and passed a resolution that called for the formation of a new area development authority in Bhuj. This Area Development Authority came into force on May 9th 2001, after the department of urban development & housing issued an order stating it was authorized to control development within its jurisdiction, which includes 5642.67 hectares. This area includes all the municipalities as well as nearby villages such as Mirzapar and Madhapar.
