Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA)
Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is part of the Urban Development Department in the government of India. As an authority, KMDA derives its powers and functions from the provisions of West Bengal Town and Country Planning Act, 1979. KMDA has an 11-member board or authority composed of both elected people's representatives and nominated bureaucrats.
The West Bengal Minister-in-Charge of Urban Development is also chairman of KMDA's board. The board takes all major policy decisions related to running the business operations; however, for decisions that may have impacts on agencies outside KMDA like KMA (Kolkata Municipal Corporation), they are forwarded after the KMDA Board recommends them.
