Goddess Parvati was at home on Mt. Kailash, wanting to have a bath in peace. She asked Nandi, her husband Shiva's Bull, to keep watch at the door and not let anyone pass. Obediently, Nandi stationed himself there to fulfill Parvati's wish. Alas When Shiva came home and wanted to enter, the loyal Nandi had to open up for him. Fuming with rage over this slight, what hurt her more was the fact that she did not have someone willingly devoted to her like Nandi was to Shiva. To remedy this, She used the turmeric paste from Her body and brought Ganesha into existence as her faithful son.
The next time Parvati wished to bathe, she posted Ganesha on guard duty at the door. When Shiva returned home, he found this strange boy telling him that he could not enter his own house! Furious, Shiva ordered his army to destroy him, but they all failed. Ganesha, the son of Devi Himself, possessed such great power.
This surprised Shiva. Seeing that this was no ordinary boy, the usually peaceful Shiva decided he would have to fight him, and in his divine fury severed Ganesha’s head, killing him instantly. When Parvati learned of this, she was so enraged and insulted that she decided to destroy the entire Creation! Lord Brahma, being the Creator, naturally had his issues with this, and pleaded her to reconsider drastic plan. She said she would, but only if two conditions were met. One, that Ganesha is brought back to life, and two, that he be forever worshipped before all the other gods.
At this point, Shiva had calmed down and acknowledged his blunder. He commanded Brahma to go out and get the head of the first living creature he met, which was facing north. Subsequently, Brahma came back with an elephant's head. Shiva then put it on Ganesha’s body and gave him life. Thus, Ganesha was accepted as one of Shiva’s sons and was made leader of all the ganas, Ganapati.
The story appears at first glance just like a nice story that we might tell our children or a myth without any real meaning. But, its true mystical meaning is veiled.
Parvati is a form of Devi, the Parashakti (Supreme Energy). The Kundalini shakti resides within the Muladhara chakra of the body. It is said that the Lord comes automatically to us when we purify ourselves of the impurities that bind us.
Nandi, Shiva's bull and Parvati's initial gatekeeper, embodies the divine energy. Unconditionally devoted to Shiva, Nandi's mind is constantly focused on Him and can easily recognize the Lord upon His arrival. This conveys that cultivating the bhakta’s mindset is a necessary step before being eligible for Devi’s highest spiritual reward.
Nandi consented to Shiva's entry, and Parvati procured the turmeric paste from Herself and shaped it into Ganesha. Being linked with the Muladhara chakra, and being the caretaker of this chakra, He represents the awareness that is rooted in Earthly matters. Consequently, Devi made Ganesha protect the heavenly knowledge from immature minds. It's when this awareness starts moving away from worldly possessions and towards the Divine, as Nandi had done, that the Divine secret is exposed.
Shiva is the Lord and Supreme Teacher. Ganesha stands for our ego-driven selves. Seldom do we realize the Lord's presence, and may even resist Him! Thus, it falls on the Guru to cut off our ego's head. Our ego is so strong that sometimes no amount of guidance will work - just like Shiva's troops could not subdue Ganesha. It thus needs a stern approach from time to time, but ultimately, our compassionate Guru finds a way to help us out.
Devi threatened to destroy the whole Creation when Ganesha's death was revealed. This symbolizes how, when the ego is relinquished, the freed Jiva loses attachment to its physical frame, and starts blending into the Supreme. The physical realm stands for Devi an unstable construction of Devi, to which this body belongs while Shiva represents the unchanging Absolute and is associated with the Soul. When the ego dies, it also takes away with it all worldly matters that were dependent on it. It is believed that if we wish to know the secrets of these worldly events, a product of Devi, we must be blessed by Ganesha beforehand.
Shiva's restoration of life to Ganesha demonstrates the need for us to replace our limited ego with a big or universal one before we can leave this life. This doesn't lead us down the path of becoming more egocentric, instead, we identify with the expansive universal Self. Therefore, we can renew our lives such that they become conduits of benefit to Creation. This new ego is one much like those held by Krishna and Buddha - akin to a thin string linking our liberated Consciousness with the world, but only for our benefit.
Ganesha wields dominion over the Ganas, ranging from various organisms to celestial entities. Those beings contribute to the management of the Creation, from natural phenomena like storms and quakes to elemental qualities such as fire and water and even bodily functions. If we do not pay homage to the Ganas, then our dealings are legal violations. Hence, rather than pleading for the grace of every Gana, we turn to their Master Sri Ganesha. His blessings bring us all their favors. He helps remove any hindrance and enables success in our endeavors.
